What is Chiku: Fridge Detective?
Chiku: Fridge Detective is a fridge tracker with expiry date reminders for iPhone and Android, made by the nonprofit Reweave. You name a food and pick a day to check on it; chiku, a small dog detective, whispers once a day when a date is near and suggests dinner from what needs eating first.
Is chiku free?
Yes. The core is free forever: unlimited items, every reminder, the weekly page, the full history. One optional purchase, the detective’s kit, adds tonight’s case, case notes, the daily round, the household and photos. It funds a nonprofit.
Do I need an account?
No. There is no sign up, no email, no password. Download it and chiku shows up.
Where is my data stored?
On your phone. There is no server holding your groceries, your photos or your notes, and this website sets no cookies and runs no analytics. Purchases are handled by the app stores through RevenueCat, which is the only thing that leaves the device. Deleting the app deletes the rest.
Will chiku tell me whether something has turned?
No, and chiku never will. chiku counts days on the dates you type in, so a date is a day to go and look, not a verdict. Your eyes and your nose decide, and official food safety guidance outranks any app, including this one.
Does chiku suggest how many days a food gets?
No. The first time you add a food, chiku asks you. After that, your own answer is filled in for you. chiku never invents numbers about your kitchen.
Does chiku scan barcodes or receipts?
No. You type a name or tap a chip, then pick the day. It takes about ten seconds, and it works for leftovers and home cooking, which no barcode has ever met.
Do the reminders work offline?
Yes. Reminders are scheduled on the phone itself. No account, no server, no internet needed for the whisper to arrive.
How many notifications will I get?
At most one per day, at an hour you chose, and only when a date is close. On a quiet day chiku says nothing at all.
What is fridge door mode?
One big calm screen made for the counter: what is worth cooking tonight, and nothing else. Prop the phone up while you decide.
What is the weekly page?
A short, warm note at the end of the week: what got eaten, what got away, and the thing you have now bought three Saturdays running. Four lines, then it lets you get on with Sunday.
Can I share my list with my household?
The detective’s kit adds household sharing: chiku makes a file and your phone hands it straight to theirs, through whatever you already use. Nothing passes through a server.
How do I move chiku to a new phone?
Send the household list from the old phone and receive it on the new one. Because nothing is stored on any server, this is the way, and it is the trade for having no account.
Is chiku on iPhone and Android?
Both, and it is the same app with the same free core, on the App Store and on Google Play.
