the short version
Chiku: Food Game is made by Reweave, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. It is a cozy pixel game about food from everywhere: children shop at a market, fill a small fridge and cook dishes from around the world, with chiku the dog beside them. There are no ads, there is no account, and the game stays on the phone.
why a nonprofit makes a food game
Reweave builds small tools that make everyday life a little kinder. The first was SuperMoo, a movement app about getting up and moving without being shouted at. chiku is the second. It began as a reminder for the fridge and grew into a game about food from everywhere.
Being a nonprofit changes the design brief. There is no growth team to feed, so there are no ads, no accounts, no streaks, and no notifications about the game. The game counts no days played.
how chiku is built
There is no server holding the game. What a child does in it lives on the phone, and the grown up door stands before every purchase and every link out. The privacy policy says the rest, including the one thing that does go through the app store: a purchase.
chiku, the foods and the dishes are drawn in pixels. The scenes, the sounds and the type live inside the game, so playing needs no one else’s servers. The one exception is a purchase, which goes through the app store.
The game’s two typefaces, Caprasimo and Nunito, are also used on this site, under the SIL Open Font License. The licences sit next to the fonts: Caprasimo licence and Nunito licence.
the deal
The fruit and vegetable stalls, the fridge, the kitchen, the words and the book are free. One optional purchase, the kitchen pass, for grown ups, opens the other three stalls and what comes later. Buying it funds maintenance and whatever Reweave builds next.
